Inside Out Project - Εν δυνάμει

The Inside Out Project in Thessaloniki

The Inside Out Project has been recognized for the way it uses art to bring people together and create dialogue around important social issues.

The Inside Out Project is an international art project initiated by French artist JR in 2011. The aim of the project is to enable people from all over the world to share their portraits and tell their story through large black and white photographs, printed on posters and placed in public spaces.

Main features of the Inside Out Project:

  • Participation: Anyone can participate by sending a black and white photo of their portrait to the Inside Out Project, which is then printed into a large poster and sent back to the participant to be publicly displayed.
  • Social change: The work uses art as a means of social change, highlighting various social issues such as justice, equality, freedom and identity.
  • Global scale: More than 400,000 portraits have been created in more than 140 countries.
  • Visibility and impact: Participants use the portraits to express personal and collective stories, amplify their presence and voice, and create impact in their communities.
  • The common feature of all the actions is the posting in public space, especially in central and recognizable places of the cities, of black and white portraits of people belonging to specific social groups.
  • Through this action, the participants seek to communicate a message or a just demand, usually concerning equality and equity among citizens.

The Inside Out Project has been recognized for the way it uses art to bring people together and create dialogue around important social issues.

The Inside Out Project in Thessaloniki, Greece, on November 11, 2018, hosted the group En Dynami.

The members and friends of the En Dynami group were photographed in order to pass the message of equality and equal treatment and rights of people with disabilities in the use and utilization of public space in the city of Thessaloniki, despite any limitations resulting from their abilities or ways of communication.

This action will join the global network of the Inside Out Project, which already counts numerous group actions in 129 cities. At the same time, it will be presented through its online platform of the same name, placing Thessaloniki on the global map of open cities that claim, through peaceful processes and through art, equal rights for its citizens.
