Creating accessible performances music and performing arts for people with sensory and cognitive disabilities

"Let's PASS": The work is a call to action, a call for a change of perspective, a counter-narrative about disabilities in the performing arts. The "PASS - Promoting Accessible ShowS" is a project at European level, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.
PASS attempts to address the problem of lack of participation and visibility for artists and audiences with cognitive and sensory disabilities in live performing arts performances.
The coordinating organisation is Fondazione Arturo Toscanini (Italy) and the project partners are ACCAC (Finland), En δυνάμει (Greece) and Studio Citadela (Czech Republic).
In the PASS project, we see diversity as a value, a development opportunity for the individual and the community. We want to think about a new way of creating and presenting in the performing arts, where every artist can express their art without barriers and every person has access to live performances.
The 4 organisations will create an accessible pilot performance using assistive technologies and combining music, theatre, dance and visual arts, with the participation of artists with and without disabilities in the creative process. The process includes experimental workshops, artistic residencies and accessibility training. The premiere of the performance will take place in Italy in March 2025 and will tour all participating countries.
The project starts with the analysis and mapping of needs and good practices on accessibility to art, in collaboration with representatives of institutions, schools, associations and other organisations. The aim is to develop guidelines for creating accessible performances, both for artists and audiences. The guidelines can be used by any interested party.
Theme of the collective performance
The theme of the collective performance will be the "Celebration of Life":
"How do you celebrate life? What do we celebrate with our lives and what is it that allows us to celebrate life? What would you do if it were the last day of the world?"
Each partner will work creatively on this theme, after a collective discussion and a joint decision on the overall approach and aesthetics of the performance.
The final performance, which will be presented in Italy, Greece, Finland and the Czech Republic, will involve artists from these countries, with and without disabilities.
