Theatre and stage acting are valuable empowerment tools for neurodiverse people and people with intellectual disabilities, supporting autonomy, self-confidence and the development of life skills through creative expression.
In this perspective, the Deputy Ambassador of Australia, Lachlan Scully, was delighted to welcome a group of neurodiverse and disabled actors and actresses from the theatre groups of the EEA "MARGARITA", the En Forces Group and Theatre - Inclusive Theatre to the Australian Embassy for a special workshop under the guidance of the internationally acclaimed Australian group Back to Back Theatre.
The "Un-Masterclass" workshop was conducted by Artistic Director Bruce Gladwin and actors Sarah Mainwaring, Scott Price and Simon Laherty.
The action was implemented in the context of the presence of the group Back to Back Theatre in Greece for the presentation of their award-winning performance "The Shadow Whose Prey the Hunter Becomes" at Athens Epidaurus Festival, the country's leading cultural institution.
This initiative aimed to enhance artistic exchange between Greek and Australian artists, as well as to strengthen the voice of people with disabilities in contemporary artistic discourse.
We would also like to thank the Athens Epidaurus Festival for supporting and hosting this cultural exchange.
The team Back to Back Theatre, based in Geelong, Australia, is internationally recognised for its radical approach to integrating disability into theatre-making, with a core of actors who identify themselves as people with disabilities.
The organisations involved were:
- EA "PEARL"
- Team In Power
- THEAMA - Theama Inclusive Theatre
- Back to Back Theatre
